Who We Are
Currently serving over 60 Kitsap County residents and their families, ranging in age from 13 to 72.
Our Vision: People with intellectual disabilities are embraced by their communities and valued for their unique abilities
Our home base is the Fellowship Hall of Seabold Church. Programs are based there, and out in the Bainbridge and greater Kitsap communities. While members are here, their families and caregivers benefit from respite. Importantly, our communities also benefit from increased inclusion and participation of people with intellectual disabilities in shared public and work places.
Vitalize Kitsap was co-founded by Holly Patton, an educator and administrator in special education; and by Deb Buitenveld, a special education para-educator and parent of one of the founding members. The catalyst was a birthday party in the fall of 2001. The birthday girl and her guests had a range of intellectual disabilities. While they sometimes crossed paths in school, they hadn’t yet connected just for fun, outside of classes. The girls enjoyed their time together so much that another gathering was planned for the following week. This led to plans for the next week, then the next. Island Time Activities became an official nonprofit in 2009. It became Vitalize Kitsap for its 20th anniversary, in order to reflect the growth and outreach to the entire Kitsap County community.
